Flashback: Stephen Hawking warned AI could mean the 'end of the human race' in years leading up to his death

FOX News

Fox News contributor Joe Concha joins "Fox & Friends First" to discuss Elon Musk's warning that artificial intelligence could threaten elections and his concerns on the declining birth rate. Long before Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak signed a letter warning that artificial intelligence poses "profound risks" to humanity, British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking had been sounding the alarm on the rapidly evolving technology. "The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race," Hawking told the BBC in an interview in 2014. Hawking, who suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) for more than 55 years, died in 2018 at the age of 76. Though he had critical remarks on AI, he also used a very basic form of the technology in order to communicate due to his disease, which weakens muscles and required Hawking to use a wheelchair.

WASHINGTON, Feb 1 (Reuters) - U.S. investors including the investment arms of Intel Corp (INTC.O) and Qualcomm Inc (QCOM.O) accounted for nearly a fifth of investments in Chinese artificial intelligence companies from 2015 to 2021, a report showed on Wednesday. The document, released by CSET, a tech policy group at Georgetown University, comes amid growing scrutiny of U.S. investments in AI, Quantum and semiconductors, as the Biden administration prepares to unveil new restrictions on U.S. funding of Chinese tech companies. According to the report, 167 U.S. investors took part in 401 transactions, or roughly 17% of the investments into Chinese AI companies in the period. Those transactions represented a total $40.2 billion in investment, or 37% of the total raised by Chinese AI companies in the 6-year period. It was not clear from the report, which pulled information from data provider Crunchbase, what percentage of the funding came from the U.S. firms.

ChatGPT sets record for fastest-growing user base in history, report says

#artificialintelligence

On Wednesday, Reuters reported that AI bot ChatGPT reached an estimated 100 million active monthly users last month, a mere two months from launch, making it the "fastest-growing consumer application in history," according to a UBS investment bank research note. In comparison, TikTok took nine months to reach 100 million monthly users, and Instagram about 2.5 years, according to UBS researcher Lloyd Walmsley. "In 20 years following the Internet space, we cannot recall a faster ramp in a consumer internet app," Reuters quotes Walmsley as writing in the UBS note. Reuters says the UBS data comes from analytics firm Similar Web, which states that around 13 million unique visitors used ChatGPT every day in January, doubling the number of users in December. ChatGPT is a conversational large language model (LLM) that can discuss almost any topic at an almost human level.
